When people guess what cereals are gluten free, Rice Krispies comes up a lot. So, let’s take a look at the ingredients.
You can see that the ingredients contain BARLEY MALT EXTRACT. Barley contains gluten and so, sadly, Kellogg’s Rice Krispies are not gluten free.
Thankfully in Canada, gluten needs to be obvious on the label. If you don’t know how to read a Canadian food label for gluten yet, check out this post.
Gluten Free Brown Rice Rice Krispies – Where did they go?
Now, Kelloggs did have a Brown Rice Rice Krispie cereal that was gluten free! It happened to be a regular in my pantry for a while, but I haven’t seen it in stores lately. They discontinued the cereal in the US a while ago, so I reached out to Kelloggs to find out what was going on. Here is their response –
Not going to lie, I’m pretty sad that they’ve discontinued it! If you loved the gluten free rice krispies too, think about reaching out to Kelloggs to let them know you miss it! You can reach out to them through this link. And who knows, maybe they’ll bring it back if they know how much it is missed!
In the meantime, here are some similar gluten free alternatives that are available on Canadian shelves.

What about Rice Krispie Squares?
I’m sorry to be the bearer of repeated bad news in this post but pre made Rice Krispies squares are not gluten free. BUT! You can easily make your own at home! These cereals will work perfectly for you. I’ve seen some other really cool cereal bar ideas, like making “puffed wheat squares” with puffed rice, making bars with Chex cereal or pretty much any of your favourite gluten free cereals. If there’s one thing I’ve learned since going gluten free, it’s that trying new things sometimes leads to treats I like even better than the originals. Don’t be afraid to experiment!
